I have been a Lara Croft fan since the days of ugly polygon graphics. But I have to say?

This is one of the most exciting game announcements I have seen in years. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release February 12, 2027 and finally Crystal Dynamics is revealing the true scale of this project. But here's the problem.

There is very little information available at the moment, and plenty of conflicting data online about what this game is. I thought I would compile a comprehensive guide. What we know, what we don't, what consoles you will require, what kind of gameplay to expect, and if you are even getting the same Lara back.

When Does Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Come Out?

That's a pretty specific date to commit to this early, which tells me the development cycle is further along than a lot of fans assume. Where Can I Play Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis?

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC. There are no last gen consoles this time around, which truthfully makes a lot of sense given how taxing modern action titles are on hardware.

I think this is a good decision. Designing a game that can potentially scale down to PlayStation 4 or the original Xbox One limits what developers can fully achieve graphically and gameplay-wise. Focusing solely on current gen hardware and PC gives Crystal Dynamics the freedom to push as far as they want with graphics, physics, character animation and world building without compromise.

As for PC specifics, we don't have official specs at this point, but from the looks of recent action games, I would expect pretty solid recommended specs if you want to maximize the settings and effects. If you have older hardware, this might be your reason to upgrade.

Console gamers can rest easy because they won't have to make any adjustments. It will just work on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X without a hitch. There's no indication of a Nintendo Switch version, and considering the technicalities it seems unlikely there will be one at launch.

Will There Be Cross-Platform Play?

No official information has been announced for cross-play capabilities in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis at this time. Since this appears to be a primarily single player action game, it is possible that cross play may not be a feature that is applicable at all like it would be for a multiplayer shooter.

What Kind of Gameplay Can We Expect?

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is definitely action-oriented, and takes the action puzzle exploration of the series and runs with it. Crystal Dynamics has been the sole developer of the series so far, and knows this franchise inside and out.

Let me clarify just a little. Since the reboot trilogy began, the Tomb Raider franchise has always maintained some balance between core mechanics: exploring environments, battling enemies in third person, and discovering ancient, unexplored locations. Now, with its title indicating a focus on areas of mythology and ancient civilizations, it would seem to be following that line of thought. This is very familiar ground for Tomb Raider, where Lara explored the dark depths of abandoned temples and underwater depths of sunken cities long lost, now to be done again with updated graphics.

Previous versions of the series could only dream about the lighting and environmental effects achievable with current generation hardware, and Legacy of Atlantis could very well be showcasing those graphics in its presentation. Yet, what I see especially promising in this new game is that Crystal Dynamics has had many versions of their engine across a variety of titles to learn from when refining many of the gameplay systems; so if the new title is building on what they have learned rather than starting over, then we could see the finest, most refined action-oriented title in the series to date. We don't expect this title to emphasize stealth mechanics more heavily, nor feature larger open areas, and we do not yet have all of the details on the system mechanics, but the action classification suggests the game isn't shifting into an entirely different genre.

Is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Worth Getting Excited About?

Based on what we've seen confirmed so far, yes Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis does seem to be one of the more enticing titles in the series for quite a while. A confirmed release date, a proven developer, and next generation only consoles all suggest a worthwhile, capital-intensive project.

I understand your frustration. Every new title by a publisher looks astonishing before it's released, and most disappoint. I'm not going to try and convince you that all of those games were actually amazing, but I'd like to highlight a couple of specifics here that make me more confident than I probably should be.

Firstly, the fact that Crystal Dynamics is bringing this title out themselves suggests a lot. Secondly, the fact that they're taking it only onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC will mean that there's less hardware to cater to, so the game will be generally better. Thirdly, an Atlantis theme suggests that the game will be drawing from the most epic mythological source material the franchise has yet encountered.

How Does This Fit Into the Tomb Raider Timeline?

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis looks to carry on Lara Croft's story after the events of the last reboot trilogy; though, much of the story has not been revealed publicly at this time. What we do know is that Crystal Dynamics has not taken this lightly and has put out a full stand-alone game rather than a rushed spinoff. One of my friends who has been following the series since PlayStation One made a joke that 'every Tomb Raider has been said to be Lara's most epic adventure yet.' Good point; truly.

But pairing her with Atlantis just seems fitting.

Atlantis as a motif fits well with where the character has been. The earlier games saw her hunting for artifacts rather impulsively; her reboot trilogy was much more grounded, more human, more vulnerable; then, with Rise of the Tomb Raider, she became a hardened, career-focused archaeologist with the skill to handle any threat. Legacy of Atlantis could well be where the journey evolves next, an archaeologist who has earned her expertise through trials of her own, about to face something centuries old and genuinely mythic in scope.

This is where the series really matters to fans. The presence of the word "Legacy" in the title isn't just for show, it suggests this game might aim to consolidate elements from Lara's past while steering into novel directions. Whether that involves allusions to her previous adventures or introducing entirely new worlds, answers will only come as we get closer to its February 2027 release. Fans tracking all major new entertainment releases will want to keep this one on their radar as more details emerge.

So let me be blunt. Not every bit of info about Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is revealed publicly yet, and we're still waiting on story details and full gameplay info to be announced. But given the firm February 12, 2027 release date, Crystal Dynamics running the show, and that bold Atlantis setting, this doesn't seem like just hype to me.

My prediction?
