In essence this film is about a poor writer living in 1930's Moscow whose life is thrown into chaos when a strange visitor arrives, an unwelcome visiting Professor and his bizarre retinue, a furious devil of a jester, a witch, a kill-or-be-killed assassin, an insatiable vampire maid and a gigantic talking black cat. The plot sounds strange enough on paper, but does it really seem that strange in the film?

And why is it strange? This is something which we shall endeavor to discover. The Bulgakov book that the film is based on was written as a satirical attack on the corrupt and inefficient Soviet systems of government and bureaucracy and this satirical tone is apparent throughout. Woland's entourage are not only there to cause chaos wherever they go but also to expose the greed, arrogance, vice and cowardice of the popular art administrators of 1930's Moscow.

On the other hand, we have the parallel plot regarding Pontius Pilate, which the Master in fact composed as a novel in the film. These two storylines have proved the most challenging aspect of adapting Bulgakov's novel and I feel Lockshin managed it with more confidence than I expected. Want to know the best part?
