Does that sound familiar? That is the same approach Sony takes with other exclusives once a console generation is coming to an end. When you can remove support for the previous gen, what a game can look and feel like is greatly expanded. For a series as visually ambitious as God of War, that has enormous consequences.

Ragnarok was already excellent at offering a new interpretation of Loki's story to Atreus, so including her mother is another way the franchise can go.

Will Kratos still be the star? Probably, to cut him from where the franchise currently is would be a pretty drastic change and I can't see that happening right now. I do expect that this time around Atreus will be able to step forward in the story more so we can establish a bit of his background before he takes up more of his own story in subsequent titles.

My theory in a nutshell: we've got an Action Adventure genre; a name that provokes great emotion and mythology; a developer with a history of consistently making great games with epic emotion, and I think that's the kind of confidence I'm ready to have, even from just a little gameplay.

The other thing to remember about Santa Monica Studio is that it has one of the most respected histories of any game development studio and that is precisely why expectations for God of War Laufey are already running so high. This is not some new or unproven team taking a brand new franchise for a first ride. It is in fact still the same studio that has been at the helm of this franchise for well over twenty years now.

Just take a quick look at the studio's working history. The very first trilogy on PS2 and PS3 followed by the 2018 reboot that was significant enough for the franchise to change dramatically, and now Ragnarok, which somehow tops the previous game in terms of emotional impact and scope. That is a relatively consistent and reliable track record, especially for an industry that so often gets sequels wrong.

A friend of mine who has played video games since the PS2 told me that Santa Monica Studio "doesn't miss," and considering that every single game in the past twenty years has been critically successful and sold very well, that is a very important statement to make.
