To be honest, although I have been aware of this franchise for some years, the movie still grabbed my interest even now, and currently has a TMDB average rating of 7.8/10 out of nearly 1,350 votes, which is quite impressive for a horror sequel at this stage in the legendary franchise. If you have been following the Evil Dead series from the start, you will be aware that it is a series that is not shy about reinventing itself when it feels it has gone as far as it can with a certain arc.

I recall when rumors of a new Evil Dead project began to make rounds, and I remember thinking to myself "well, can they really do better than what has been?" But I'm just saying though that when Sébastien Vaniček joined the project as director it was, in my mind at least, an indication that something new would be explored. I'm not sure if the general consensus is the same but from knowing Vaniček's previous work and the word flying around about this movie; apparently Vaniček's horror leans into an intense fear of family members, fears and phobias rather than extreme violence and cheap 'boo' moments. So, the 110 minute running time is quite average for this type of horror affair, easy to sit through with just enough time to wait through the slow gradual build up before everything is just bat-shit crazy.

Evil Dead Burn's cast is headed up by Souheila Yacoub playing Alice, the woman caught in the middle of all this madness. She is supported by a cast of actors who portray the strange expanded family of her dead husband and to be honest the cast seems quite cohesive in a way horror films don't always achieve.

Tandi Wright appears as Susan and all I have seen discussed about her character is she has this subtly disturbing quality that I suppose is what is expected from the family matriarch type. Hunter Doohan makes an appearance as Joseph and if you have seen other work he has done you will know he has the wide range of what people expect in horror casting.

Luciane Buchanan performs as Thya, Erroll Shand appears as Edgar, Maude Davey is credited as Polly, George Pullar is listed as Will and Greta van den Brink is cast as Jessica. Solid enough as a plotline, but this particular family happen to be descended from an important researcher in the field of demonic possession, a detail that if you know your Evil Dead back story can lend itself to some truly Gothic momentum. The tag line reads, Every family has its demons, and I mean that almost literally here.

As Alice becomes more involved with her in-laws she sees those she loves turn into entities that feed on fear itself, a truly frightening premise in and of itself. It is not just the horror of possession, but the loved ones you once knew falling apart, into what keeps them alive in the first place, that makes this horrifying. The most interesting notion I found about this plot was the existential feeling underneath all of the visceral horror.

Alice finds out that all of the promises she made in life still stand after her death, a deeply disturbing thought as the body of the film was centered on marriage and attachment, and the breaking apart, just turned into a wonderful eldritch creature. This seemed to me to be the franchise's way of exploring more human emotional terrain, but with the splattering of disturbing, unearthly horror that is its trademark. It is no longer the cool woods cabin and an ancient tome motif (though you can see those roots clearly in the malevolent force it unleashed), but a trip through the soul that has been torn apart.

Looking at the previous Evil Deads I think one of the things I remember most is horror showing up unannounced, disguised as regular people. Here we have horror woven into the family fabric. The perspective of this being the offspring of the research into the damned gives the narrative a sense of inevitability, like Alice simply wandered into a trap laid out hundreds of years before she even met her husband.

Sébastien Vaniček's direction builds into that sense of foreboding. From what we've seen of Vaniček's stylistic choices thus far, he seems to be more keen on slow, insidiously growing tension interspersed with moments of splatters of gore rather than the relentless chaos of the previous installments.

Does this mean that it skips the series' reputation for grotesquely excessive monsters? Not on your life. The "creatures that feed on fear" concept still delivers some disturbing imagery, it just is dressed up in a more relatable dramatic context.

I'd say if you liked the practical special effects of the first several movies but wanted more emotional connection this one might scratch that itch better than the franchise has been lately.

Will Evil Dead Burn Be The Last Movie?

Up to now there has not been any kind of official statement suggesting that Evil Dead Burn was always planned to be the end of the franchise. Nothing about the marketing or tagline or plot synopsis suggests that this is "the final chapter" and with the scale of the franchise, it doesn't tend to die after only one great hit.

Already holding a reasonably impressive 7.8 rating and having already begun to generate excitement amongst horror fans, I wouldn't be surprised if this were a stepping stone instead of a stopping point. The Evil Dead franchise has endured reboots, remakes and time-jumps for quite some time now so it is really only just getting started.

Unless we see some confirmed sequel announcement however, this is all just speculation from the point it starts being received by an audience.
