Buddy Review (2026): Is It Worth Watching?

Before I get started let me just say that Buddy is one of the strangest horror comedies I have seen in a while, which is a good thing. As of now it has a rating of 8.3 out of 10 on TMDB for its first round of votes and the film is about a singing unicorn that is insane. That is a good score for a movie about an insane singing unicorn.

Directed by Casper Kelly it was released August 27, 2026 and runs for 95 minutes of the "what the heck did I just watch." If you were a child who watched terrible local television when it ran out of puppets and wondered "what if" they suddenly became murderous, you will love the way Buddy answers that question.

So is it good enough to be worth your time or not? I will look at the acting the tone, the humor and if it really was that good or is it just riding the bandwagon. There is quite a lot to discuss.

What Is Buddy Actually About?

Buddy is a singing orange unicorn who holds a small human cast hostage in a bizarre televisual universe that becomes increasingly more bizarre as each scene unfolds. That is the outline of the plot, and truth be told it's what it is about. The plot is simple and it is actually the simple premise which makes it become increasingly more surreal.

Imagine a slapstick nightmare children's program rendered corrupted from the inside. "It's Buddy!" reassures the characters, very much in the tone you would expect of the kind of children's program which this is lampooning. Only this time the start is glaringly wrong.

But what really impressed me was what the film was really managing to do. Buddy isn't just a generic jump-scare puppet monstrosity. He's singing, he's flirting, he's fooling.

And then at some point he just is genuinely scary even though he's still got that big, fat, stupid, lovable comedy heart. I've been a Kelly devotee for a while now, mostly through his shorts, and this feels like that same style, stretched into a feature and doubled in length in the most glorious and hilarious way. Madness in the best way.

No-one's playing safe and that's exactly why it's been talked about so much.

The Cast Brings This Weird World To Life

All of the voice work, from the talented cast, could have been a one joke gimmick. Cristin Milioti does a great job as Grace, the voice of reason in a world where that does not make it any less bizarre. Topher Grace plays Ben and Delaney Quinn is the voice of Freddy, the two other humans that Buddy is forced to endure with his increasingly bizarre hijinks.

Clint Howard plays George in the film, but really a horror comedy would not be complete without him. It is the voice talent that is the real treat. Keegan-Michael Key makes Buddy the Unicorn sound like a hyper maniac, unable to transition from lovable to homicidal without giving you whiplash.

Michael Shannon's Willie and Patton Oswalt's Strappy do not necessarily scare, but they do bring a layer of dark hilarity to the puppet cast and so does Eric Bauza, who voices five other characters including Mr. Mailbox and Pee Flower. That's the character that is named Pee Flower.

Did such a ridiculous premise really deserve this much good voice talent?

Not everyone phoned in their performances, at least not in every one.

Does The Horror Comedy Mix Actually Work?

Sure! The comedy horror mix works well with Buddy because the film never overextends itself to one end or the other. Many horror comedies either degenerate into being too funny, or they get too dark and stop being funny altogether, but Buddy walks a difficult line and pulls it off successfully.

The comedy is not derived from mocking the premise, but instead comes from the nature of the concept itself. So that horned, singing, orange unicorn taking people to a fabricated TV world is funny in and of itself, but the humor is used in an awkward way that maximizes the humor

The horror then manifests in Buddy's monumental and disconcerting actions as he makes larger and larger demands and begins to mentally disintegrate. Seeing what is just a silly little fellow at first becoming sinister becomes troubling and drives a fantastic contrast.

Going into this film, I was not a huge fan of Buddy's concept. It did not appear that in the trailers they could really capture the comedy or the horror well, but the film still is able to sustain the horror and also include a dark comedy element that throws a new twist into the classic climb and decline of scare-to-joke-to-scare. If you enjoy horror that plays with tone, Evil Dead Burn is another 2026 release worth keeping on your radar.

How Does Buddy Compare To Other Killer Toy Movies?

What is so different with Buddy is that it swaps the generic killer toy/evil mascot horror's usual depraved slashings for an ominous collection of songs and musical numbers. Other films of the odd sub-genre do most definitely follow the usual (and indeed, huge numbers of them!) jump-scare/up-tick in slaughterings. Buddy is nothing like that at all!

What I found even more interesting is that this surreal TV world environment does make a difference. There is no climbing out into another world, no calling the cops because the characters are all stuck in Buddy's perfect world just like he wants it. I think that one factor alone adds a separate kind of tension from your average haunted doll movie.

And honestly?

That is the one thing this movie does right. It isn't trying to compete as just another haunted doll movie. It's carving its own niche in the weird horror comedy genre.

Is Buddy Worth Watching In 2026?

Absolutely! If you like your horror comedies weird and you are not too sensitive you will definitely want to watch Buddy and if that is not for you then I think the film understands this.

It is niche, it is a bit weird and it just embraces that.

If you are someone who just wants a straight-forward slasher with simple enough rules Buddy is going to leave you confused and fuming. The pacing is all over the place and the tone can switch from funny to serious very quickly.

However if like me you love the extreme black comedy horror films of today like Late Night with the Devil you will feel Buddy is right up your alley. It is obvious Casper Kelly had something crazy in mind and although it is a risky move it mostly pays off.

My favorite thing about Buddy was the way the entire supporting cast committed fully to the big ensemble. Cristin Milioti keeping sane as the voice of reason, Keegan-Michael Key going through the roof as the killer and the whole support cast flooding the rooms with excess characters. It made the whole movie seem like it was on purpose and not just a quick cash in.

In all I really think Buddy justifies the early acclaim and large TMDB score it is getting and it is going to be one of those movies that people will re-watch just to see the crazier things they did not notice the first time.
